A Family Gathering

Cecil the Lion……well, we cannot tell you much about that incident but we can tell you what God has been doing through us these past few weeks.

We had the wonderful privilege of having our family with us and just said good-bye to them today. Our Internet has not been good; this is being sent via Thomas Carroll upon his return to the states.

Jane’s sister, Jennifer joined us for her first international mission trip. Jane and the girls took her to Victoria Falls and then made a stop for a day safari at Hwange National Game Reserve that included lunch with the elephants! Rebekah presented a dermatology lecture to the nurses and staff at the local hospital while her husband, Robby, who is a physical therapist, gave a “hands-on” manual therapy lecture to the local physiotherapists here in Bulawayo.

Rachel presented a lecture to the NUST university medical students as well as a lecture to the nurses and staff and Mater Dei Hospital. Even our son Russell utilized his skills and knowledge in advising a new residential development community here in the city of Bulawayo.

It was a special time for Jane and I to watch our kids become involved and transfer some of their skills and talents to medical professionals and lay folks here in this great community.

As a family, we drove out to the rural area of Tsholotsho, and joined in with an Australian medical mission team to do a large rural outreach of a medical/eye camp. Although it was a long 12-hour workday, it was rewarding to see so many folks receive medical attention. We saw 120 patients, some received medications, some received eyeglasses and some of them were added to the list for cataract and other surgery.

There were many happy folks that received eyeglasses but we must tell you about one family. The grandmother brought in her 2 grandsons who had poor vision. The boys were ages 8 and 12.

They walked out smiling, one boy was given a -8 .00 and the other boy was a -19. Yes, both boys had never worn glasses and yes both boys were given “children’s “ glasses that were in our boxes!

Thank you for your continued prayer support for us, we are looking forward to welcoming on August 7th, Dr. Erick Bothun, his wife Cara, and son Dane. Erick is a pediatric ophthalmologist from Minnesota and this is his third trip to Bulawayo. He and 2 other pediatric ophthalmologists who will arrive on the 12th will be conducting, along with Steve, a country wide pediatric conference here in Bulawayo.

Again, please know how grateful we are for your prayer and support.
