Returning to Care

Dear Friends and Supporters,

In the next week we will be flying back to Zimbabwe for more than 6 weeks. We look forward with anticipation to interacting with those who will be impacted as we continue our work and ministry. Steve has already contacted 7 doctors who have expressed their wishes for him to train them in different areas of patient management, both surgical and otherwise. He will spend time with them at the Richard Morris Eye Hospital and at the Mater Dei Hospital.

We will be unloading and placing different pieces of eye equipment that arrived 3 months ago. We were given a new cataract machine by Alcon Corporation which will be used to continue the surgical teaching program. We will also place lasers, visual field machines, a retinal camera, and other much needed equipment that have generously been donated by various partners here in the US. Steve will teach the use and care of these vital but fragile instruments.

Steve has also arranged with Dr. Moyo and Dr. Malemane, 2 local colleagues, to travel to the southern part of the country to conduct a large surgical eye camp. We hope that many will receive their eyesight as a result of this outreach.

The Mater Dei Hospital has undergone an expansion project. Along with new eye examination rooms and operating room, a new mammography suite to screen for breast cancer, a dialysis unit, and pre- and post-natal care rooms, additional space for other medical disciplines will be constructed. The need for funding is desperate in light of the extreme economic depression presently in the country. We were asked by the hospital leadership to apply for grants here in the US. A number of very generous folks have seen the need, and to date $100,000 has been raised! We thank God for His hand in stirring the hearts of those who have contributed.

So, we ask for your prayers as we embark on another chapter of ministry to bring both physical and spiritual eyesight to the people of Southern Africa.

Steve and Jane Beaty
