Every Day Issues

Dear Friends & Supporters,

More weeks have passed and we now have been in Zimbabwe for more than 5 weeks. Steve has continued his role in teaching and mentoring. He has been giving talks on different eye diseases every Wednesday morning to the doctors at Richard Morris Eye Hospital. In addition, he has been teaching medical students, both in the hospital setting and also at the NUST Medical School in a classroom setting. He also attends morning rounds at the hospital where patients with severe eye conditions have been admitted, many of which confront the local staff daily. It seems as if every Monday the wards are full of young men and women who have terrible eye injuries related to drinking and violence. These injuries usually will result in long term loss of eyesight; so the outcome of a night of drinking and carousing is so serious and heartbreaking to see.

Steve has also been leading a young men’s bible study on Tuesday nights, and has seen the lives of these men open up to things of God. It is a privilege to attend to them, and to hear of their lives leading up to this time of studying God’s word as it relates to every day issues in a young man’s life.

We held an eye camp at a retirement facility this week. We saw, once again, the hardships that these elderly people face because of the economic depression in this country. But we were able to bring encouragement as we treated their eye conditions, and our fellow laborers from the church prayed with many who were patiently waiting for hours to have their eyes examined. Every patient received a pair of sunglasses in addition to other glasses and medications that they might have needed.

Our time is growing short here, and we soon will depart again for the States. But we can see the effects of our labors in this community, both physically and spiritually. Thank you for your continued prayers for us. They are very effective, and we thank God for them because they make a difference in eternal outcomes.

May God continue to richly bless you.

Steve and Jane Beaty
