Dear Friends; We are in the second week of our time in Bulawayo, and so much has been packed into these first few days here. On our flights over, we arrived in Addis Abiba, Ethiopia 30 minutes late with only 30 minutes to go before our flight to Bulawayo. As we disembarked from our US flight, the airlines agent met us at the bottom of the stairway off the plane. He drove us helter-skelter across […]
Dear friends and supporters: ( Resending this newsletter because we accidentally omitted Hugh Stephen’s name. Hugh just turned 2 years old and absolutely loves his “doc”.) We are getting ready and packing our bags for the next chapter of our work in Zimbabwe. We will be flying out from Atlanta, Georgia on Monday, June 30th. Our flight to Addis Abiba on Ethiopian Airlines will be 15 hours in length. We will have only one hour […]
Dear friends and supporters: We are getting ready and packing our bags for the next chapter of our work in Zimbabwe. We will be flying out from Atlanta, Georgia on Monday, June 30th. Our flight to Addis Abiba on Ethiopian Airlines will be 15 hours in length. We will have only one hour layover (we need to have our running shoes on) until we catch the next 4 hour flight to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Please uplift […]
Dear friends of Eyecare; We just arrived back in the US after a long journey with a couple of ‘hiccups’ in the schedule. Ethiopian Airlines informed us when we reached Addis Abiba that our flight to Atlanta, Georgia had been cancelled. They rerouted us to Washington DC, and fortunately, we were able to catch another flight to Atlanta a few hours later. During our last week in Bulawayo, Steve saw patients in consultation, gave lectures, […]
Dear friends; This week has been a whirlwind of activity as we launched the new surgical retina program with our partners at the Mater Dei Hospital. Dr. Matt West, a retina surgeon from Birmingham, Alabama arrived on Saturday, February 22nd, and he began performing surgery on Monday, February 24th. Dr. Gilbert Moyo, the retina doctor in training, helped him, and quite soon after the first operation, Dr. West gave him some control over parts of […]
Dear Friends and Supporters; Thank you for your prayers this last week as we have been preparing for Dr. Matthew West’s visit to be the first retina surgeon in our training program. Dr West, originally from Columbus, GA, now resides with his family in Birmingham, AL where he is a partner with Retina Specialists of Alabama. It is interesting to note that Matt joined us 20 years ago on our team here to Zimbabwe as […]
Dear friends and supporters; Another very busy week has gone by. Two Australian eye nurses from the Perth Eye Hospital arrived on Saturday to spend 3 weeks with us as we teach, consult and prepare to start the new surgical retina training service. One of the nurses actually works in surgery where retina procedures are performed. She sets up the equipment and supplies for the cases, and scrubs in with the doctors. Her knowledge is […]
Dear Friends; We have now been in Zimbabwe for 1 week. The flights over were, thankfully, without any difficulties, although our transfer at Addis Abiba airport was quite stressful. We were surprised, but grateful, to see our luggage arrive when we landed in Bulawayo. Steve started back immediately with consultations and teaching. He found that the advanced cataract teaching program has continued in his absence. The fourth group of young eye doctors are now being […]
