In 1999, God called Dr. Steve Beaty and his wife Jane to leave America and move to Zimbabwe. As a doctor with a growing practice, this was a big decision. The Lord blessed Dr. Beaty and Jane with many patients who wanted to support their efforts and help. After much prayer, the Beaty’s felt God leading them to create a non-profit and to move forward with the call on their lives. With creating the non-profit came the creation of it’s first board. Dr. Beaty asked the following individuals to participate on the board and with the assistance of a CPA and lawyer, Eyecare To The Needy was formed. In the years that have followed, Eyecare To The Needy has helped countless individuals with the medical care that they need and could not otherwise obtain.
Members of the board include:
Mr. Don Asbell
Dr. Steve Beaty
Dr. Charles Calhoun
Mrs. Ginger Calhoun
Dr. Banks Carroll
Mr. Gary Holmes
Mr. John Illges
Mrs. Frankie Lake
Rev.Dr. Michael Stewart
Who are the Beatys?
In 2004, Dr. Beaty stepped out in faith and moved his family to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe to serve as a medical missionary with the International Mission Board. For Dr. Beaty this was like going home. After completion of the 4 year commitment, he returned to West Georgia Eye Care . He now continues to return to Zimbabwe each year for 4-8 weeks working with and meeting the eyesight and vision needs of the people.
Dr. Beaty’s wife, Jane, is a physical therapist. When she accompanies her husband on trips to Zimbabwe she becomes his optician and surgical assistant. Serving the people of Zimbabwe side by side has been a blessing and a calling for this couple throughout their 30 + years of marriage.
The Beaty’s have 3 children: Rebekah is a surgical physician’s assistant, is married and lives in Birmingham. Rachel is married and living in Atlanta as a pharmacist specializing in pediatric pharmacology. Russell graduated from Georgia Tech in 2013 and is working for a real estate developer in Atlanta. Each of the children have served alongside their parents in various ways over the years.
