Dear Friends and Supporters,
Well, we are wrapping up our time in Zimbabwe for 2016, and as we reflect on this trip spanning almost 2 months, we are thankful to God for the successes and accomplishments in ministry to the people of southern Zimbabwe. We gave hundreds of donated pairs of glasses to patients at 7 eye camps, performed surgery at 3 different hospitals, delivered 18 lectures and shared God’s love to many who came to us with numerous eye care needs. We saw desperation and despair in many patients but also saw their joy as they received care for their eyes as our gift to them.
Steve was able to spend a significantly greater amount of time teaching younger doctors, and he has taken on a greater role as a consultant at the large referral eye hospital and training facility in Bulawayo. This greater involvement has come at the request of some of the organizations overseeing the running of the hospital.
As we think back on our time spent this summer in Zimbabwe, we remember several highlights; the tennis players and coaches who poured themselves into the children’s lives at the tennis clinics; the deaf and blind man who regained his eyesight at the Hwange surgical eye camp; the lady who, after having had cataract surgery, said “I’m so overjoyed because it was so easy and now I can see to read my Bible”; the little 3 year old who, while Steve was teaching another eye doctor how to perform surgery to straighten crossed eyes, almost died during the operation from anesthetic complications but thankfully recovered a few hours later. Her mother saw that her eyes were straight and had Steve hold her to take a picture.
There are many more stories of how God worked through us and protected us, and we thank Him for allowing us to be instruments of blessing to people with so little hope.
Thank you for your support in thought and prayer. We are so grateful to the many who support us in so many ways and we look forward to the next chapter in the ministry of Eyecare to The Needy.
