Moving Fast

Dear Friends,

Time has moved by swiftly over here, and we have been, as always, busy in the work and ministry of eye care. The past two weeks have been filled with opportunities for teaching surgical procedures and management of eye disease to doctors, medical students, and nurses. At the Richard Morris Eye Hospital, we have installed a laser so kindly donated by West Georgia Eye Care Center and we have begun to show and teach the doctors in laser procedures for various eye conditions.

We have also continued to work and teach techniques in pediatric eye surgery, which was started by our colleagues, Dr. Eric Bothan and Dr. Faruk Orge. The mentoring in phaco cataract surgery has also progressed and we are looking to receive a new cataract surgery machine generously donated by Alcon Corporation.

Steve had the privilege of operating on several one-eyed patients, and we rejoiced to see the joy and their countenance when the eye patch was removed and their eyesight returned. He also performed bilateral cataract surgery on a 12 year old boy who had lost vision several years ago. Tomorrow we will have the joy of watching this young man’s amazement with his new vision.

We also have been privileged to serve in several more rural eye camps which reaped many happy people receiving eyeglasses and medicines.

We welcomed two more folks for the last 3 weeks. Our son, Russell, is here, as well as a dear friend of ours, Anne Lyle Illges. Anne Lyle has been involved in teaching occupational therapists, nurses and doctors in giving lectures in Occupational Therapy management with neonatal intensive care infants at the government hospital. Both have assisted us with 2 rural eye camps in checking vision and dispensing eyeglasses.

Our time will soon end with our hearts full of seeing God use our skills in assisting so many with eye needs here in Zimbabwe. Thank you for partnering with us in God’s ministry of Eyecare to the Needy.

Blessings,

Steve & Jane Beaty
