Dear Friends and Supporters,
We have now been in Zimbabwe for a couple weeks. The jet lag is finally gone, we were able to unload a delivered crate, and we are in the midst of work and ministry including low vision support groups. Steve has been consulting at the local Catholic hospital and also working and teaching at the regional government eye hospital, Richard Morris Hospital.
Today Steve helped in surgery as the doctors’ team performed 40 cataract operations. Needless to say, it was a long and busy one. He also saw a 10 year old boy a couple of days ago who had been hit in his left eye with a shoe 2 weeks ago by one of the boys he was playing with. His teacher at the orphanage noticed that he turned his head to see the board in the front of the classroom. She brought him to see Steve, and his examination revealed that the lens in the left eye had been ruptured with severe inflammation and high pressure. Steve referred him to his pediatric ophthalmologist friend here in town who will operate on the boy tomorrow. We pray for a successful outcome.
We see many cases of injuries related to violence here, many times linked to alcohol consumption. We pray that God will change hearts and lives to end this scourge in Zimbabwean society.
We have several rural eye camps planned in the coming weeks, and we look forward to giving our services and talents to many who have no access to eye care.
Thank you again for continuing to uplift us in your thoughts and prayers. We look forward to providing further updates of our work here.
Blessings to you,
Steve and Jane Beaty
