Dear Friends and Supporters,
We arrived in Zimbabwe several weeks ago after the long and tiring journey, and are now busy consulting at the Mater Dei Hospital, as well as teaching at the Richard Morris Eye Hospital in Bulawayo.
Our journey over to Zimbabwe was actually very smooth – it started out with a wonderful blessing in the form of a Delta Air Lines check-in lady in Atlanta. She checked our luggage all the way to Bulawayo, and this saved us overweight charges as well as the difficulties of lugging bags around different airports. We thank God for the ‘little things’ such as this, and also for the ease in which we went through customs at our final destination in Bulawayo.
Steve has already seen some very sad and difficult eye cases at the hospital. One lady, 93 years old, had been told that she had a cataract, and the charge to have it removed would be $5,000! This lady had actually known Steve’s father many years ago when he was a missionary in Zimbabwe. In fact, when Steve examined the lady, she had a mild cataract, but also had a much more serious issue. She had evidence of macular degeneration, and also what was possibly a melanoma in the eye. No cataract surgery is needed, and fortunately, the lady will be traveling to England in a few weeks where more testing and treatment can be given for this life-threatening condition.
We have scheduled a total of 6 eye camps with different churches while we are here. Please pray that we will have the strength and fortitude to take care of hundreds of needy people, as well as introduce many to the Lord as we see them.
As we go out and encounter people in this city of a million, our hearts are heavy as we see the plight and abject poverty around us. We pray that we will be able to make a difference in the lives of many as we work and minister.
Thank you again for your prayers, and we thank God for His protection and provision to us as we continue the work here.
Steve and Jane Beaty
