Dear friends and supporters:
We are getting ready and packing our bags for the next chapter of our work in Zimbabwe. We will be flying out from Atlanta, Georgia on Monday, June 30th. Our flight to Addis Abiba on Ethiopian Airlines will be 15 hours in length. We will have only one hour layover (we need to have our running shoes on) until we catch the next 4 hour flight to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Please uplift us in prayer for safety in travel and a restful journey.
The day after our arrival, will be driving on the difficult journey to the Victoria Falls in two vehicles. We will meet Dr. Andrew Barkmeier, his wife and four daughters. Dr. Barkmeier is a retina surgeon at Mayo Clinic who will be giving lectures at the Africa Retina Society Congress meeting at Victoria Falls. We will then transport the Barkmeier family back to Bulawayo where he will be teaching Dr. Gilbert Moyo, our retina surgery trainee.
Dr. Moyo recently had the great privilege of being the recipient of a grant to travel to Tenwick Hospital in Kenya. He spent almost a month under the mentorship of Dr. Peter Goodwin, and his basic retina surgical skills improved through his experience in Kenya. We expect a further improvement in Dr. Moyo’s skills with Dr. Barkmeier and with Dr. Cris Larzo from Southeastern Retina Associates in Johnson City, Tennessee who will join us a week after Dr. Barkmeier and his family depart.
We will also launch a service using cornea cross linking to treat the disease, keratoconus, of the cornea. A gracious grant was given for us to purchase the equipment from Switzerland, and Dr. Ora Malemane, one of our local colleagues, will be trained in this skill to treat so many afflicted by this ailment.
There is much more to come: a new laser arriving for glaucoma treatment, eye camps to take primary eye care and the gospel to outlying rural areas, and a team to lead in a prayer conference.
Thank you for your prayers as we prepare for the journey and for the work to be done in the service of our Lord.
