Dear friends and supporters;
We had a very blessed and fruitful day yesterday as we conducted our first community eye camp on Edisto Island, South Carolina, here in the US. Steve has given free eye clinics at Brother Bryan Mission in downtown Birmingham, Alabama, and has done part time clinical work and teaching at UAB in Birmingham. However, yesterday was a first for him to lead a volunteer team to conduct an eye camp.
Our team was formed with members of Redeemer Fellowship Church, New Missionary Baptist Church, and Allen AME Church on Edisto Island. Pastor Rob Heath, Pastor Morrison and Pastor Pierson did much work organizing and promoting the eye camp to the community on Edisto Island.
We were able to perform visual acuity tests, blood pressure checks, comprehensive eye examinations by Steve, and distribution of free sunglasses, reading glasses, and prescription eyeglasses by Jane and her assistants. Our team also provided spiritual counselling and prayer with many who came, and who expressed their desire for prayer and counselling.
It was a great privilege to provide free eye care to so many in the community of Edisto Island, South Carolina who had no health insurance and could not afford ophthalmic care. Diagnoses of cataracts, glaucoma, optic nerve damage, and diabetic eye problems were seen, and referrals to the university hospital for further evaluation were generated.
We thank and praise God for allowing us the privilege to use the same skills and talents that we have used in Africa to now give to our own citizens here in the United States. Steve will be heading back to Zimbabwe at the end of May to host a retina surgeon, Dr. Darrell Baskin. Pastor. Rob Heath will also accompany him, and will be preaching in several churches. We appreciate once again your prayers for him as he prepares to return to assist in the retina training program.
Steve and Jane Beaty
