Eyes and Hearts

Dear Friends and Supporters,

We continue to be very busy in work and ministry here in Zimbabwe. Steve has seen a number of complex eye issues in his consulting practice and has been able to help many who have come with concerns about the loss of eyesight. He saw a gentleman a couple weeks ago who had diminished vision from a clouded capsule behind the his intraocular lens after cataract surgery. He was able to immediately perform a simple laser procedure to open it up, and he received word that the man’s eyesight had greatly improved even just a couple of hours after the procedure. Steve also has been performing laser treatments on a lady with bleeding and severe diabetic damage in her eyes. She had been forced to travel to the capital city for treatment, and was very grateful to have Steve’s intervention here in Bulawayo.

The training at the Richard Morris Eye Hospital is still moving forward with younger trainees learning cataract surgery on a brand new Legion cataract machine that was so kindly donated by the Alcon Corporation. Steve observed while the doctors completed several cataract procedures successfully this week. Skills are continuing to be passed down, and the morale of the doctors and staff is high as we continue with our goal of equipping physicians with the skills needed to perform first rate medical care.

Steve is leading a young men’s bible study every week, exploring God’s word to find answers to relevant issues that these men face. It has been a very rewarding time of interaction and dialogue, and Steve has discovered a number of underlying personal difficulties that confront these guys in their faith walk. He has been able to offer assurance and guidance through biblical perspectives.

We partnered yesterday with our team from Bulawayo Baptist Church to conduct an eye camp (non-surgical) at a sister church in the high density, poor area of the city. We saw and treated over a hundred patients, and we rejoice to know that at least three people came to faith as they were presented with the Gospel.

So, we continue here to ask the Father for strength, wisdom and grace as we strive to meet the needs of so many in this country. Thank you once again for uplifting us in your prayers and thoughts.

Steve and Jane Beaty
